Charles and Beth Steidle Art Exhibit At ModernFormations Gallery

Opening June 4th 7-10 pm

“Quel Dommage! The Artwork of Siblings Beth and Charles Steidle”

Quel dommage! What a shame! What a pity! This exhibit is inspired by all the little sadnesses and minor disasters accumulated over time: a malfunctioning anatomy, a rabid raccoon, a falling horse, a missing arm, animals eating other animals. As children, Charles rubbed red yarn in Beth’s eye. Beth repeatedly told Charles he was adopted and unwanted. Now, as responsible adults, they have teamed up to present new works, in a variety of media, created throughout the past year.

Artists Eric Luden and Kris Boban at Zombo Gallery Lawrenceville

The ZOMBO Gallery presents "in stereo", the art of Eric Luden and Kris Boban. The show opens June 4th from 6-9pm.
Eric Luden
An art director friend once asked me why I rarely draw thin women in my designs. My response was that I find it more enjoyable to draw a curve than a straight line. My art education involved studying the work of cartoonist Don Martin in the pages of MAD Magazine as a child. Most of my previous work was done digitally, but now I discovered the fun of working with a brush and One Shot paint.
Kris Boban
My art is a blend of influences from traditional animation, graphic design, and world cultures. I often combines cute and/or direful creatures in melancholy or joyful humanistic situations.
Born in 1983 in New Jersey and a BFA graduate from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in animation. I quickly took notice of the beauty of LA and the evolving underground art scene. Deeply inspired by artists like Tim Biskup, Joe Ledbetter, Amanda Vissell, and Greg Simkins, I would paint and draw after-hours from my full-time job on Nickelodeon's "Yo Gabba Gabba!". My animation work grabbed the attention of JJ Abrams, Warner Bros, MTV and Paramount Pictures, and my work has been used for various popular brands seen around the world.
The ZOMBO Gallery is located at 4900 Hatfield St. in Lawrenceville.

Pittsburgh Artist Ben Hernstrom, Ambulantic Videoworks Residency in Iceland

Be a part of supporting Pittsburgh artist Ben Hernstrom (Ambulantic Videoworks) and his artist residency in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Direct link to donate here.

Video here.

from Ambulantic Videoworks

This July I am heading to Reykjavik to the SIMRES artist residency, then spending August at the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, where I will make videos and take photos.

The SIMRES (Icelandic Association of Artists residency) in Reykjavik only accepts 10 foreigners at a time, so I am flattered and excited about being accepted into the program.

Skagaströnd is an amazing seaside fishing village with a population of only 520 people. I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to spend a month there creating new work.

Having 60 days to work on new creative projects, without the constant distractions of running my small video production company (reading/sending a bazillion emails a day, researching jobs, begging people to hire me to make a video for them for like half of what everyone else charges, recutting the same *$^%&$ video for the 10th time because the client has no idea what they want, et cetera et cetera et cetera) would be unfathomably wondrous. (Well, OK, I actually really like my job mostly, but I still really want to go to Iceland to make new work and take 2 months away from the normal jobs.

While there, I'm hoping to shoot a short documentary on the Country Days festival. Skagaströnd is a very small fishing village, north of the Arctic Circle. It is famous throughout Iceland for being the home of Hallbjörn Helgason, “The Icelandic Cowboy” and “Country King", who pretty much single-handedly introduced American country music to Iceland. Every August they have a huge festival, with live music and other festivities.
You can see a good example of the kind of film I'm looking to produce here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/ambulantic...

I am also planning on making a short experimental narrative. For reference please see my 2006 short:
I am like cities
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587167/

And I'm going to take some photos. W.H. Auden described the light in Iceland by saying it was "the most magical light of anywhere on earth." The summer days have as many as 18 hours of sunlight, resulting in spectacular opportunities for creating images.

Project location: Reykjavík

3 Rivers Arts Festival: The Art of Technology

Looks like a good start to shedding the 3 Rivers Food Festival hangover this festival has had for quite some time (that and the focus on many out of state market artists which still continues). You be the judge and check it aht for yourselves!

June 4-13 2010

The exhibits and performances may change the way we view art and technology, and help us to better realize the unlimited potential of each. Plus, they offer us some downright good times that are sure to benefit everyone’s Festival experience. Ranging from digital puppetry to interactive sculptures and robots, video installations, and an interactive exhibit requiring text messages from viewers. Following are a few glimpses into what you will see on the visual arts side; we’ll cover performances in another post.

David Edwards’ 14′ tall sculpture made from 80% recycled aluminum takes the shape of a potted sunflower. Its wind-powered spinning petals transform wind into energy using a micro wind turbine. In addition, there are flexible solar panels that collect energy for programmable LED lighting. This exhibit and others can be seen at Point State Park.

Congo Women Exhibit June 4 July 25 2010 Pittsburgh PA

Congo/Women
Traveling photo exhibition highlights beauty and strength of women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo
June 4 – July 25, 2010
Exhibition opens during Three Rivers Arts Festival
SPACE, 812 Liberty Avenue, Cultural District
Pittsburgh, PA
The average lifespan of a woman in the Democratic Republic of Congo is 46 years.
Congo/Women is a traveling photography exhibit highlighting the beauty and strength of the girls and women of the Democratic Republic of Congo who are currently battling an unprecedented wave of gender based violence and a lack of essential medical care. Featuring the work of Lynsey Addario, Marcus Bleasdale, Ron Haviv, and James Nachtwey the installation weaves large portraits of these women and contextual images of the culture and history of the region together into an environment which describes the full complexity of this challenge. Video and audio testimony accompanies the exhibit, allowing viewers to gain and in depth understanding of the crisis. Pregnancy as a result of rape, obstetric and traumatic fistula, HIV infection, permanent reproductive health damage, and death will be discussed, as well as the inevitable societal stresses caused by such atrocities. Curated from a combination of recently taken photography and newly commissioned work – particularly of women and girls recovering from violence – the exhibit will provide a comprehensive view of the issue and its possible solutions.
The exhibit is accompanied by a website ([BLINK: http://lists.pgharts.org/t/559088/352247/377/0/] ) which provides links to immediate actions that visitors who view the exhibit can take to provide support. In addition, visitors to the site and to the exhibition can post their own portraits on our visual petition, providing an international demonstration of the growing support that will be raised. Media attention to opening events is promoted by local connections of each institution and with the national support of human rights groups. Congo/Women can be loaned by interested venues for an affordable cost. The format is flexible and our curators will work with each institution to help them present the imagery in an appropriate fashion.
Congo/Women is co-produced by Art Works Projects and the Ellen Stone Belic Institute of the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media, Columbia College Chicago. The exhibition was organized by Leslie Thomas with creative advisor Jane M. Saks.
Major support for Congo/Women has been provided by United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, Humanity United, and Leadership Donors of the Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media Columbia College Chicago.

Maggie Taylor and Abelardo Morell at Silver Eye Center for Photography Pittsburgh PA

"CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER..."

Silver Eye Center for Photography brings Wonderland to Pittsburgh with two stunning exhibitions by Maggie Taylor and Abelardo Morell

PITTSBURGH, Pa. 4/22/10 - The Silver Eye Center for Photography is pleased to present exhibitions this summer by two of the most renowned and influential photographers working today - Maggie Taylor and Abelardo Morell - each highlighting a singular reinterpretation of the 150-year-old story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
These Strange Adventures: The Art of Maggie Taylor on view at Silver Eye's South Side Venue beginning May 14, 2010.
Maggie Taylor first exhibited her work at Silver Eye in 1995, and today, she is internationally recognized as one of the most inventive and accomplished artists working with cutting-edge digital imaging processes. This exhibition features 40 of Taylor's photo montages created from 2003 to 2009. The centerpiece is a selection of 23 works from Almost Alice: New Illustrations of Wonderland, a three-year project published to great acclaim by Modernbook Editions in 2008.

Since 1996, Maggie Taylor has been using the most advanced digital image-making tools in place of the camera and darkroom to create her fantastical work. Starting with objects that she finds on eBay or in flea markets such as old Victorian photographic portraits, Taylor scans and assembles a single image from dozens upon dozens of Photoshop layers.

"A single work may take months of experimentation and careful thought to complete and Taylor's artistry is, in short, nothing less than virtuosic," comments Ellen Fleurov, curator of the exhibition and Silver Eye's executive director. "Yet, what makes Taylor truly great is not just her technical mastery but the rich interplay between photographic veracity and illusion, the psychological tension between dreams and reality, which seems to stand at the heart of her deeply affecting and beautiful work."

These Strange Adventures: The Art of Maggie Taylor will be on view from May 14 through August 21, 2010 at the Silver Eye Center for Photography at 1015 East Carson Street in Pittsburgh's South Side. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibition is made possible, in part, through support from the BNY Mellon Audience Development Fund. Media sponsors are WYEP 91.3FM and Pittsburgh City Paper.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: Photographs by Abelardo Morell opens May 7 in the Cultural District as part of Three Rivers Arts Festival

Abelardo Morell's rethinking of the Lewis Carroll classic precedes Maggie Taylor's series by a decade and the fifteen images in the suite will be on view from May 7 through June 25, 2010 at the 709 Penn Gallery in downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District. The exhibition is organized by the Silver Eye Center for Photography and presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Education and Community Engagement Department in association with the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Admission is free and open to the public.

Abelardo Morell's interest in the Alice story is not surprising for he has long been intrigued by the magical qualities of books and their enduring presence in our memory and history. To make his images, Morell created paper cut-outs from the original Sir John Tenniel illustrations to Alice in Wonderland and then arranged the figures into carefully constructed scenarios. These mis-en-scenes were then photographed from a variety of often disorienting perspectives with a large format view camera. The resulting images brim with a wit, delight and punning imagination that Lewis Carroll himself, a pioneering photographer, would have relished.

Gallery hours are Wednesday - Thursday (11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.); Friday - Saturday (11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.); and Sunday (11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Special extended hours during the Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 4 through 13; visit www.pgharts.org for further details.

The exhibition will be open during the First Friday Gallery Crawl on June 4, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This evening of events showcases an array of activities throughout the Cultural District and they are free and open to the public. For more information and a map of the Gallery Crawl events, visit www.pgharts.org or call 412.456.6666.

Weleda treatment at Schminkbar

Here are some impressions of yesterday's Weleda aperitif. Weleda is a Swiss organic cosmetics brand and they have a long tradition of using pure ingredients for their products.

Weleda invited us to an aperitif and offered various treatments with their newest product line such as the Granatapfel (pomegranate) face skin care line!

We had a very relaxing afternoon at the Schminkbar, where the staff made sure we all got pampered.

Delicate food and massages are probably the best way to lift one's mood.

Summer in the city

Like many other women every summer I'm on the look-out for new beauty products to make me feel polished all day long. Instead of doing a "What's in my beauty bag?" post I just listed them below. I've been using most of them for a long time and I'm really satisfied with them. So, here are my summer essentials:

1) Estée Lauder Double Wear: Let me start by saying that I have a rather oily, blemish-prone skin, so when it gets warmer this foundation has pretty much of a holy grail status for me. It gives great coverage and lasts really long. I used the Double Wear Light version of it during last summer but I came to the conclusion that this one was much better for humid weather.

2) Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup: This is the second foundation I use, mostly when I have breakouts. Its staying power can pretty much hold up with Double Wear and after applying it I don't even need additional concealer for spots.

3) Chanel Poudre Universelle Compacte: I like a matt finish so I carry this translucent powder with me at all times. Upon applying foundation I set my foundation with loose powder from Yves Rocher at home, so this compact always stays in my bag for touch-ups on the go and lasts me a long time.

4) L'Oréal Touche Magique Concealer: I always buy different under-eye concealers but I keep coming back to this brush pen to brighten up and illuminate my tired eyes. The coverage is not very high and since I use the lightest shade it also doubles as a highlighter.

5) MAC Sonic Chic Mineralized Blush in Dainty: This blush came in a goodie bag and I've been using it almost every day for nearly a year now! If I can see the bottom of the pan it means that I really loved the product and this is no exception. ^^ Dainty is a warm pink color with subtle shimmer and flatters my skintone equally in summer and in winter. It's highly pigmented, long-lasting and gives my cheeks a pretty glow.

6) Chanel Nouvelle Vague nail polish: This nail polish is on my shopping list but unfortunately it's still not available in Switzerland. Chanel nail polishes almost have no staying power on my nails but I know that I won't be able to resist this shade which will be perfect for summer.

7) Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté in Peach Passion: Apparently this lipstick is on my wish list since October 2008!! I don't really know why I never bought it but I definitely have to have this peach colored lipstick this summer!

8) Bourjois Délice de Poudre Bronzer: I was lucky to get this bronzer in a goodie bag as well and recommended it to many girlfriends in the last two years I've been using it. I mostly use it for contouring my cheekbones or when I want a sunkissed look I lightly apply it all over my face. This bronzer looks and smells heavenly like a chocolate bar and I'm definitely sticking with it since this one doesn't look orangey or muddy on me.

Do we share any favorites? Which products are your summer essentials?

"Take A Letter" Conceived by Alexi Morrissey

Presented by the New Hazlett Theater's Artist Residence program.

3 NIGHTS ONLY

May 27th-29th 2010

Featuring Alexi Morrissey and Adrienne Wehr

Take a Letter explores issues of artistic frustration, the failures of language, and the ultimate struggles of power – over the self, and over others. Drawing on the influences of 20th-century masters such as George Orwell, T.S. Eliot, and Phillip K. Dick, the performance imagines the price of communication in the modern world, and whether or not we are willing and able to pay them.

A 8,000 lb, 20' tall, 30' wide, robotic sculpture whirls at the center of the artwork like a mad dervish. Utilizing Pittsburgh's local talent in research, computing, machining and fabrication artist Alexi Morrissey has assembled a collaborative team of world-class experts in art, theater, science and technology to dovetail all these worlds into one evening of spectacle.

Test Review Part 1

HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam 2

After testing the latest special edition by Hewlett-Packard, I want to point out some advantages that accrued while doing the Style-Check.

The first thing you'll notice about this netbook is that it's less than 1" thin and as light as 2.69Ibs. It fits so easily into purses and you start to wonder if this tiny device is really going to work. Well, yes it does. ^^

As soon as you turn on the Netbook you'll become aware of the butterfly theme, which is not only to see on the cover. The desktop includes three butterflies as well. And that's not all, there a two little ones more. The common Windows start button has been replaced by a butterfly. It begins to flutter its wings the moment you put the cursor on the start menu. When you click the menu, another butterfly flies for a few seconds. It leaves the initial position by flying away and repositioning itself in the background. The flush glass display is greatly glossy by the way ^^

The design by Vivienne Tam reflects a Chinese love story called "Butterfly Lovers" - a fairy tale of freedom, romance and inspiration.

The Netbook represents these three key claims in a beautiful way. At first sight the butterfly details seem to be rather an optional accessory than a clear benefit, but the design and the girly elements are something you'd be delighted at in any situation.

The photo above was taken while enjoying coffee and sweets with Nesli. We both brought the Netbook along since it's so uncomplicated to carry it around. We could go online very quickly and it felt really nice to be free. As students you don't have to care about the full computer rooms at the university anymore!

Not only as a student but also as a blogger, there are several helpful set ups. As a blogger you scroll around a page or image a lot, but the scrolling, zooming and rotating can be done by using two fingers. You hardly need to move them since the TouchPad is so sleek and smooth.

Another set up, which I appreciate is the Digital Media Slot (no. 17 in the photo above). You can place your memory card into the slot and you don't need a separate card reader. There were many times when I couldn't find my card reader and it is so annoying especially if you want to transfer and check out the photos you took...

The integrated keyboard is neary a full size keyboard - 92% of the standard size. The typing is comfortable and its backdrop color is the same warm champagne gold like on the cover.

The HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam 2 offers on the one hand beauty on the outside and on the other hand many qualities on the inside. It is possible to work productively and even get creative while you're on the go.

"I wanted to give life and color to a computer. Even if you're in the office, you should feel like you're in a garden," Vivienne Tam said about her first design back in 2008.

It's very nice to see that this philosphy is still valid for her work.

The Netbook embodies for me some kind of a small first aid kit. The mini laptop is something you shouldn't leave at home when you're a busy person. It allows you in any situation to go online very quickly and to get important things done.

The Netbook isn't only about technology, it's also about fashion and lifestyle. HP and Tam created a new genre.

Thanks to Hewlett-Packard and Richterich und Partner, who appointed us to be their "style scouts" for the Tam special edition 2, we were able to get an idea about this new approach.

Therefore we can't thank you enough for this opportunity!

Does anyone of you own this lovely digital clutch as well? It would be nice to hear about your impressions...
