The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Gestures at the Mattress Factory Art Museum Pittsburgh PA

The 14th installment in the Gestures Exhibition Series, guest-curated by Katherine Talcott, will open with a public reception on Saturday, May 8, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The exhibition will feature new works by Danny Bracken, Dee Briggs, Matthew Conboy & Heather Pinson, Ryder Henry, Mary Mazziotti, Connie Merriman, Ben Schachter, Paul Schifino, Tugboat Printshop: Paul Roden & Valerie Lueth, Robert Villamagna and Larkin Werner

Artist in Residence: David Beattie

“David Beattie’s sculptural works combine the use of sound, movement and physics to create unlikely alliances. His reapplication of domestic objects and technologies offer a fresh reading of their use and function and allow a reinterpretation of the specific identity and history of these redundant objects.” (Exhibition text from Mercer Union Centre For Contemporary Visual Art)

David Beattie was born in N. Ireland in 1979. He earned his B.A. in Fine Art from Dublin’s National College of Art and Design, and his M.A. in Visual Art Practices from Dun Loaghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, also in Dublin.

He has received a number of awards including an Arts Council Artists Bursary in 2009 and a grant from the Harpo Foundation whose mission is to support artists who are under-recognized by the field.

Beattie is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Mercer Union Centre For Contemporary Visual Art in Toronto, Canada. Other solo shows include Butler Gallery (Kilkenny, 2009); Oonagh Young Gallery (Dublin, 2009); Mermaid Arts Centre (Bray, Co. Wicklow, 2008) and Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (Dublin, 2006).

Join us on Friday, May 15, as Thad discusses his work and inspirations with music provided by renowned jazz drummer Roger Humphries and friends, and a poetry reading by award-winning poet Ed Roberson. The discussion will be moderated by Heinz History Center curator, Samuel Black.
